In plain words
A normal browser shows you web pages and waits for you to do everything. An AI browser adds an assistant beside the page. You can ask it to summarise an article, compare the phones open in five tabs, or explain a confusing form.
Many go further with an agent mode. You say "find a train to Jaipur on Saturday morning and fill in the booking form", and the AI scrolls, clicks and types in the browser itself while you watch. It usually stops before paying or posting and asks you to finish.
The big risk is that the AI reads everything on a page, including text planted by tricksters. Hidden instructions on a website can try to steer it, and the AI is acting with your logins.
Everyday example
A helper sitting at your laptop
Imagine asking a cousin to sit at your laptop and book your bus ticket while you cook. They can see your open tabs, they are logged in as you, and they work fast. That is handy. It also means if a dodgy website shows them a note saying "also send your OTP here", a careless helper might do it. An AI browser is that helper.
Where the example breaks: A sensible cousin would find that note suspicious. An AI can struggle to tell the difference between your instructions and text written on the page, which is exactly what attackers exploit.
How it actually works
An AI browser combines a chatbot that reads the current page with computer use: an AI that operates a screen by looking and clicking.
Read the page
The browser sends the page text, and sometimes a screenshot, to a language model along with your request. This powers summaries, comparisons across tabs and questions about what you are reading.
Act on the page
In agent mode the model decides the next action, such as click this button or type in this box. The browser carries it out, takes a fresh look and repeats, the same loop as any AI agent.
Hand back control
Most agent modes let you take over at any time and pause for logins, payments or posts. With Gemini in Chrome, as 9to5Google reported, you must "actually press the buy button" yourself.
The security problem
Security researchers at Brave showed in August 2025 that instructions hidden in a Reddit comment could make an AI browser fetch a user's email address and a login code. This is prompt injection. Normal website safety rules do not stop it, because the AI acts across all your logged-in sites.
- Launches
- Perplexity Comet (July 2025), Microsoft Edge Copilot Mode (July 2025), Claude in Chrome (preview August 2025, generally available August 2026), Gemini auto browse in Chrome (January 2026)
- Fast-changing
- OpenAI's ChatGPT Atlas browser launched in October 2025 and stopped working on 9 August 2026, with its browser agent features moving into ChatGPT and Codex
- Measured risk
- In Anthropic's August 2025 tests, its defences cut attack success against its browser agent from 23.6% to 11.2%, lower but not zero
- Safer use
- Use agent mode on trusted sites, keep approvals on for payments and messages, and consider a logged-out or separate profile for agent tasks
Products here change month to month. The idea stays the same: a browser where an AI can read and act.
Questions people ask
What is an agentic browser?
It is an AI browser that can take actions, not just answer questions. You give it a task, like filling a form or comparing prices across sites, and it clicks and types on web pages for you, usually pausing for your approval before anything important.
Are AI browsers safe to use?
They carry real risks. Hidden instructions on a web page can try to trick the AI, and it acts with your logins. Companies have added defences, but none claim to stop every attack. Keep approvals on, avoid agent mode on unfamiliar sites, and never let it handle passwords unsupervised.
Do I need a new browser to use AI?
Not always. Some AI browsers are separate apps, but Chrome and Edge have added AI features to the browser you may already use, and some AI companies offer extensions instead. As of October 2026 the main options include all three kinds.
What is the difference between an AI browser and computer use?
Computer use is the general ability of an AI to operate a screen by looking and clicking. An AI browser applies it inside a web browser, where most everyday tasks happen, and adds page reading features like summaries.
