AI search engine

Also called answer engine, AI search, AI Overviews

An AI search engine searches the web for you, reads the top pages and writes a short answer with links, instead of giving you a list to open.

In plain words

Classic search gives you ten blue links and leaves the reading to you. An AI search engine does that reading itself. It runs the searches, opens the most useful pages, and writes one summary that answers your question, with small links showing where each part came from.

You see this as Google's AI Overviews at the top of results, as Google's AI Mode, in apps built around it like Perplexity, and when a chatbot such as ChatGPT searches the web mid-conversation.

It saves time on simple questions. It can also summarise wrongly, lean on a poor source, or sound sure when the web disagrees. The links are there so you can check, and for anything important you should.

Everyday example

Asking a well-read friend

Planning a Goa trip, you could read twenty travel blogs yourself. Or you could ask a friend who has just read them all: "Is October a good time?" They give you a two-line answer and say which blogs they got it from. Handy, as long as your friend read carefully and the blogs were any good.

Where the example breaks: A friend can tell you when they are unsure or when the blogs disagreed. AI answers often blend sources smoothly, so disagreement or weak evidence can disappear from the summary.

How it actually works

Under the hood it is retrieval-augmented generation with the whole web as the library.

  1. Search, often many times

Your question may be split into several searches. Google calls this "query fan-out": "breaking down your question into subtopics and issuing a multitude of queries simultaneously".

  2. Read the best pages

The system picks top results from its search index and pulls the relevant passages into the model's prompt.

  3. Write with citations

A language model writes the answer from those passages and attaches links to the pages it used. Because it read real pages, it can cover events after its knowledge cutoff.

  4. Where it goes wrong

Bad or satirical pages, outdated pages, or a misread passage can all end up in a confident answer, which is why citations matter. Hallucinations are reduced, not removed.

Milestones
Perplexity launched December 2022. Google AI Overviews for everyone in the U.S., May 2024. ChatGPT search, October 2024. Google AI Mode for everyone in the U.S., May 2025
In India
Google's AI Mode launched in India in June 2025, added Hindi in September 2025 and seven more Indian languages, including Tamil, Telugu and Bengali, in October 2025
Effect on clicks
Pew Research (March 2025 data, 900 U.S. adults): people clicked a result in 8% of visits with an AI summary, against 15% without one

Fewer clicks matters to the sites that wrote the information, and it is an open debate how AI search should share value with them.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between Google search and AI search?

Classic Google search ranks pages and shows you links to read. AI search reads pages for you and writes a summary with links. Google now does both: AI Overviews sit above the regular results, and AI Mode is a separate conversational search.

Are AI search answers accurate?

Often, but not always. The answer depends on which pages were found and how well the AI read them. It can mix up details or rely on a weak source. Click the citations for anything that matters, like health, money or travel rules.

Is Perplexity a search engine?

Yes, an AI one. Perplexity searches the web, then uses large language models to write an answer with numbered sources. It is an app, not a model, and it can use models from several companies.

Does AI search mean fewer visits to websites?

Early data says yes. In a Pew Research study of 900 U.S. adults' browsing in March 2025, people clicked a regular result in 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, and 15% when it did not. Links inside the summary got clicks in about 1% of visits.

Does ChatGPT search the internet?

Yes, when it needs to. OpenAI added ChatGPT search in October 2024. ChatGPT searches automatically when a question may benefit from web information, or when you ask it to, and shows links to its sources.
