In plain words
Training or running a big AI model needs expensive chips, a data center to put them in, and engineers to keep them working. Most businesses, colleges and app makers cannot build that. So they rent it from a cloud company, paying by the hour or by how much they use.
Cloud AI comes in layers. You can rent raw AI chips, such as GPUs, and run your own models on them. You can rent ready-made tools for building and hosting models. Or you can simply send requests to a finished model through an API and pay per token. Many apps you use, from chatbots to photo editors, work this way behind the scenes.
As of mid-2026 the market leaders are Amazon, Microsoft and Google, alongside newer firms that mainly rent out GPUs. Governments rent and share computing too: India's IndiaAI Mission offers GPUs to start-ups and researchers at affordable rates.
Everyday example
The tent house for a wedding
Few families own 500 chairs, a shamiana, lights and a sound system. For a wedding they call a tent house, which brings it all, sets it up and takes it away afterwards, for a fee. Cloud AI is the tent house of computing: you rent as many chips as the job needs, for as long as it needs, and someone else owns, powers and maintains them.
Where the example breaks: A tent house's chairs come to your door. With cloud AI the chips stay in the provider's data center and your data travels to them, which raises questions about privacy and where data is stored.
How it actually works
Modern cloud computing grew from renting servers by the hour: Amazon opened its EC2 service in August 2006. AI added a new and far more expensive kind of server to rent.
Renting chips
The basic layer is renting computers fitted with AI chips, often eight GPUs per server, by the hour or on longer contracts. Customers bring their own software and models, including open-weight models they download.
Renting a model
The simplest layer is a model API. Your app sends text or images over the internet, the provider runs the model on its own chips, and you pay for the tokens used. You never see the hardware at all.
Why choose the cloud
No big upfront purchase, capacity that grows or shrinks with demand, and access to new chips without having to buy them. The trade-offs are an ongoing bill, dependence on one provider, and sending data outside your own walls.
Clouds build their own chips
The biggest providers also design their own AI accelerators, such as Google's TPU, Amazon's Trainium and Microsoft's Maia, and run them alongside Nvidia GPUs.
Where the data center sits
Location matters for privacy rules and for speed. Many governments want AI computing inside their own borders, often called sovereign AI; India's IndiaAI Mission, which builds a shared pool of GPUs, is one example.
- Early landmark
- Amazon EC2, renting servers by the hour, launched in beta in August 2006
- Market size
- About $143 billion of enterprise cloud infrastructure spending in April to June 2026, up 43% in a year, with AI the main driver (Synergy Research)
- Market leaders
- Amazon, Microsoft and Google, as of mid-2026 (Synergy Research)
- India
- IndiaAI Mission approved in March 2024 with ₹10,372 crore; more than 38,000 GPUs on its shared compute portal by March 2026
The opposite of cloud AI is on-device AI, where a small model runs on your own phone or laptop.
Questions people ask
What is the difference between cloud AI and on-device AI?
Cloud AI runs on powerful chips in a provider's data center, so it can use very large models, but needs an internet connection and sends your data away. On-device AI runs on your own phone or laptop, works offline and keeps data local, but must use much smaller models.
Is ChatGPT cloud AI?
Yes. When you type into ChatGPT, your message travels to data centers where the model runs on AI chips, and only the reply comes back to your phone. That is why it needs an internet connection. The same is true of most big chatbots.
Is my data safe with cloud AI?
It depends on the provider, the product and your settings. Business cloud services usually promise in their contracts how customer data is stored and used. Free consumer apps may use conversations to improve models unless you opt out. Read the privacy terms, and avoid pasting truly sensitive details.
Can I rent a GPU in India?
Yes. Several global and Indian cloud companies rent GPUs by the hour. Eligible start-ups, students and researchers can also apply through the government's IndiaAI compute portal, which had more than 38,000 GPUs on board by March 2026, offered at affordable rates.
Why not just buy the chips?
Top AI chips are costly, hard to get, need special power and cooling, and are overtaken by newer models within a few years. Renting suits work that comes in bursts. Companies with steady, very large demand often do both: they own some chips and rent more when needed.
