Canvas and artifacts

Also called chatgpt canvas, claude artifacts, writing blocks

Canvas and artifacts are panels beside an AI chat where the thing you are making, a document, code or small app, lives and gets edited.

Using AIEveryday

In plain words

In a normal chat, every change you ask for produces a whole new reply. Ask for an essay, then "make the second paragraph shorter", and you scroll through two full copies. After five rounds, the work is buried in the conversation.

A canvas or artifact panel fixes that. The AI puts the work itself, an essay, a letter, a block of code, a chart or a small interactive page, in its own window next to the chat. You keep talking on the left; the document on the right gets updated in place. You can often edit it yourself, see earlier versions, run or preview code, and share or export the result.

The names differ by app. Anthropic's Claude calls them artifacts. Google's Gemini calls its version Canvas. OpenAI's ChatGPT introduced a canvas in 2024, but as of November 2026 its newest models show editable writing and code blocks inside the chat instead.

Everyday example

Planning a trip on a whiteboard

Four friends plan a Manali trip on WhatsApp. After 200 messages, nobody can find the final dates or the hotel. So one of them writes the plan on a shared sheet: dates, bookings, budget, who pays what. The chat keeps going, but the plan lives in one place, and every change goes straight onto it. That sheet is the canvas; the group chat is the conversation.

Where the example breaks: On a shared sheet, everyone sees every edit happen. In an AI panel, the AI may rewrite more than you asked, so it is worth checking the version history after big changes.

How it actually works

Behind the panel, the AI is still producing text. The app decides when a reply is a piece of work worth its own window, and keeps track of versions.

  1. The app spots a work product

When a reply is long, self-contained and likely to be reused, such as a document, code file or web page, the app shows it in the panel. Anthropic's help pages describe content that is significant and self-contained, "typically over 15 lines".

  2. Targeted edits

You can highlight part of the work and ask for a change to just that bit, so the AI knows exactly where to focus. Edits land in the same document instead of a whole new reply, and shortcuts handle common jobs like changing length or fixing code.

  3. Code that runs

For web pages, charts and small apps, the panel can preview the result live. Some apps let these mini apps call the AI themselves, so a quiz or tool made in chat keeps working for whoever opens it.

  4. Versions, sharing and export

Panels keep earlier versions so you can step back. Finished work can be shared by link or sent elsewhere, for example to Google Docs from Gemini's Canvas.

Claude artifacts
Introduced 21 June 2024 with Claude 3.5 Sonnet, as a "dedicated window alongside" the conversation
ChatGPT canvas
Introduced 3 October 2024 for writing and coding. Removed from newer models in 2026 in favour of in-chat writing and code blocks, kept on older models for a time
Gemini Canvas
Introduced 18 March 2025. Can turn a document into slides, a quiz, an infographic or a web page
What goes in them
Documents, code, web pages, diagrams, dashboards and small interactive tools

Feature names and limits change often, so check each app's help pages for what your plan includes.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between ChatGPT canvas and Claude artifacts?

They solved the same problem: keeping the work in a panel beside the chat. Claude's artifacts lean towards code, web pages and small apps as well as documents. ChatGPT's canvas focused on writing and code editing; as of November 2026 OpenAI's newer models use in-chat writing and code blocks instead.

Where did canvas go in ChatGPT?

In 2026 OpenAI stopped offering canvas on its newest ChatGPT models and moved to editable writing blocks and code blocks inside replies. OpenAI said paid users could keep using canvas on older models for a limited time.

Can I share an artifact or canvas with someone?

Usually yes. Claude artifacts start private and can be shared, and Gemini Canvas creations can be shared by public link. Whoever opens a link may be able to copy it and keep editing their own version.

Is an artifact the same as a file?

Not quite. An artifact lives inside the AI app with its version history and can be edited by asking. You can usually download or export it as a normal file when you are done.
