In plain words
Amazon is a company, not a single AI. Most people meet its AI in one of two places, and they are very different things.
At home there is Alexa, the voice assistant in Echo speakers, first sold in 2014. Its newer version, Alexa+, announced in February 2025, runs on large language models, so it can hold a proper conversation, remember context and do tasks with several steps, such as ordering groceries or controlling lights.
For businesses there is Bedrock, part of Amazon Web Services (AWS), Amazon's cloud. Bedrock is like a counter where companies pick an AI model, from Amazon's own family called Nova or from other labs, and build it into their apps through an API without running the hardware themselves. Behind both sits Amazon's huge cloud of data centres and its own AI chips.
Everyday example
A home cook and a catering kitchen
Picture a big food company. In your home it places a cook who listens and makes what you ask for. Separately, it runs a catering kitchen where restaurants rent stoves and choose from many chefs' recipes to serve their own customers. Alexa+ is the cook in your home. Bedrock is the catering kitchen, where businesses rent Amazon's computers and pick from many companies' AI models.
Where the example breaks: A cook really understands food. Alexa+ predicts likely replies and actions from patterns, so it can misunderstand a request or get a fact wrong.

How it actually works
Amazon's AI work stacks in layers, from chips up to the assistant.
Chips and data centres
AWS runs data centres around the world. Besides renting out GPUs from other makers, Amazon designs its own AI chips, called Trainium, used to train and run large models.
Many models on one counter
Bedrock lets a business call foundation models from several companies through one service. When it became generally available in September 2023, it offered models from AI21 Labs, Anthropic, Cohere, Meta, Stability AI and Amazon.
Amazon's own models
Amazon also trains its own model family, Nova, which covers text, images and speech and is offered through Bedrock alongside other companies' models.

Questions people ask
What is the difference between Alexa and Alexa+?
Alexa is Amazon's voice assistant, first sold in 2014, which handled mostly short, simple commands. Alexa+ is the newer version built on large language models, so it can hold a natural conversation, remember context and carry out tasks with several steps.
Is Alexa+ available in India?
Yes. Amazon began rolling out Alexa+ in India on 16 September 2026 as an early access programme, with Hindi and English support. Features and terms may change after early access, so check Amazon's own pages.
What is Amazon Bedrock?
A service in Amazon's cloud, AWS, that lets businesses use ready-made AI models from several companies through one API. They can build those models into their own apps and pay for what they use, without owning the computers.
Does Amazon make its own AI models?
Yes. Its Nova family covers text, images and speech and is offered through Bedrock. Amazon also offers many other companies' models side by side, and it designs its own AI chips, called Trainium.
