AI memory

Also called memory, remembers me

AI memory lets a chatbot carry useful facts about you, like your diet or your job, from one conversation into the next.

Products, laws and numbers here change fast. Checked October 2026.

In plain words

Normally, each new chat with an AI starts from a blank page. Tell it on Monday that you're vegetarian, and on Friday it may cheerfully suggest butter chicken.

Memory features change that. The app notes useful details as you chat, or when you say "remember this", and saves them outside the conversation. When you start a new chat, it quietly slips the relevant notes into what the AI reads first. The AI itself hasn't learned anything new: it is simply being reminded.

That makes answers feel personal, but it also means the app keeps information about you. As of October 2026, ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini all offer memory, and all let you view, edit, delete or switch it off, and chat in a temporary mode that doesn't use it.

Everyday example

The neighbourhood tailor's notebook

A good tailor doesn't remember every customer's measurements in their head. They keep a notebook: your name, chest size, "prefers loose fit". When you walk in a year later, they open the page before cutting. AI memory is that notebook. The skill stays the same, but the notes make the result fit you.

Where the example breaks: You can see the tailor's notebook only if you ask. With AI memory you can usually open the list yourself, and it may also draw on past chats in ways that are harder to see, so check the settings.

How it actually works

A language model has no memory between conversations. Its parameters are fixed after training. Memory is built by the app around it.

  1. Saving

The app stores short notes when you ask it to remember something, or when the model judges a detail worth keeping. Some apps also index your past conversations so they can be searched later.

  2. Recalling

At the start of a new chat, or when a question seems related, the app selects relevant notes or past snippets, often by meaning-based search like RAG, and adds them to the model's context window, next to the system prompt.

  3. Using

The model reads those notes like any other text and tailors its reply. Because notes take space and can be outdated, apps keep them short and let you correct them.

  4. Controlling

You can usually view and delete memories, turn memory off, keep separate memories per project, or use a temporary chat. On ChatGPT, deleting a chat does not delete memories taken from it: you remove the memory itself.

ChatGPT
Memory tested from February 2024, wider release September 2024; able to reference past chats from April 2025
Claude
Memory for all paid users from October 2025, and on the free plan by March 2026, with optional separate memory per project
Gemini
Can draw on past chats, a setting called Personal context, from August 2025, plus temporary chats
Switching apps
Claude offers a memory import tool for bringing context from other chatbots (as of March 2026)

For agents, the same idea appears as notes files the agent writes and rereads to keep track of long tasks. See context engineering.

Questions people ask

Does ChatGPT remember previous conversations?

Yes, if memory is on. It keeps saved memories (details you asked it to remember or it picked up) and can reference past chats. You can view and delete memories in settings, turn memory off, or use a temporary chat that neither uses nor updates memory.

How do you turn off memory in ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini?

Each app has it in settings. In ChatGPT it sits under Personalization. In Gemini it is Personal context, including "Your past chats with Gemini". In Claude it is in the memory settings. For one-off private chats, use the temporary or incognito chat option.

Does AI memory mean the model is learning from me?

Not in the training sense. Memory is notes stored by the app and fed back into new chats. The model's weights don't change. Separately, some services may use chats to train future models unless you opt out, which is a different setting.

Is AI memory safe?

It is convenient but means more personal data is stored. Avoid sharing passwords, ID numbers or health details you wouldn't want kept, review the memory list now and then, and use temporary chats for sensitive topics.
